What is a swap?
A swap, also known as a Clothing Swap or Closwap, is an event where people exchange their clothes (or other goods) that are of value but no longer used clothing or items with other people.
Swaps are a good way to freshen up your wardrobe, get some socialization (meet new people), and support the environment by keeping clothes and goods from the landfills.
Why attend or host a swap?
Why not!?
Clothing swaps clean out your closet, add some new digs to your wardrobe, save money, support the good of the earth, and have fun!
What to bring?
Depending on the type of swap you're attending, the items may vary. Some swaps have themes and requests for those particular themes. For example, a winter swap may request donations of boots, heavy coats, sweaters, gloves, and knit caps. While a sports themed swap might request athletic wear, baseball caps, and athletic related items like swim goggles or sweat proof watches.
Other swaps may focus more on the social aspect of the event and accept any type of donation from jeans to skirts to high heels and toys.
Do attendees have to bring items to swap?
Depends on the type of swap. The entry fee for some swaps might be a clothing item or cash donation.
Other swaps may not require anything, but will accept donations of clothes, goods, or cash before and/or the day of event. Although it not be mandatory for entry.
Should there be a theme?
Themes give an idea of what type of donations will be preferred at the event and offer participants clarity about what to expect.
Themes can also be fun! Dressing up in your favorite sport coat or enjoying a space decorated in French decor while sipping mimosas make for good times. Also entice people to attend future swaps.
What happens to items that don't get swapped or taken?
Items that are deemed in good shape are saved for future swaps or donated to a local non-profit organization that accepts clothing or used goods.
Items that are not deemed to be in good quality are either given back to their owner (when possible), recycled (when able), or kept to be used as rags or decorations at future events.
